Progress on Tasmania’s ‘Next Iconic Walk’ Unveiled

Exciting progress is being made on Tasmania’s $40 million, 28-kilometre multi-day trek—known as the Next Iconic Walk. Set to become one of the state’s standout outdoor experiences, new artist renders have just been revealed, offering a glimpse into what this epic adventure will look like once completed.

The project, which promises to deliver breathtaking vistas and top-tier facilities, is now in the crucial consultation phase. Minister for Parks and Environment, Nick Duigan, emphasised the importance of community involvement, with the public invited to participate in the ongoing discussions about the walk’s design.

“We’re sharing updated concepts, including hut and campground site designs, at public information sessions around the state,” Minister Duigan said. “Anyone with an interest in the project is welcome to join, explore the plans, and get a better sense of what’s in store.”

Last night, Ulverstone hosted one of these sessions, and with more to come in Launceston and Hobart, the buzz around this new trail is growing. Attendees have the chance to view detailed maps, hut designs, and some early ideas for the interpretive themes that will enrich the experience along the track.

Once completed, the Next Iconic Walk will be part of Tasmania’s 2030 Strong Plan for the Future, and it’s shaping up to be a gamechanger for the state—especially the West Coast. With stunning lookouts and key points of interest already mapped out, this trail is set to become a must-do for adventurers and nature lovers alike.

Not only is this project about enhancing Tasmania’s reputation as a global walking destination, but it’s also a significant job creator. Around 139 jobs will be generated during construction, with an additional 40 positions in tourism and hospitality once the trail opens.

Scheduled for completion in 2029, the Next Iconic Walk will join the ranks of Tasmania’s famed treks, such as the Overland Track and Three Capes Track, offering another reason to explore the island’s rugged beauty.
